Pilot Club of Baytown and Pilot Clubs and Anchor Clubs around the World observe the month of March as Brain Awareness month.  The Brain Injury Association of America—the organization that has designated March as Brain Injury Awareness Month—reports more than 5.3 million people in the United States, including children, are living with permanent brain injuries. That’s one in every 60 people. At least 2.8 million Americans sustain traumatic brain injuries in the United States every year.

On Pilot Club’s Brain Awareness Week: March 2024  Pilots and Anchors are promoting brain safety.  BrainMindersTM is Pilot International’s signature program originally designed in 2001 to teach safety to children to help prevent brain injuries using puppets. With Pilot Club’s BrainMindersTM program, we have the opportunity of lowering the alarming number for the future. Schools are beginning to open back up for clubs to come in and do our puppet shows.

Pilot Club of Baytown recently attended three beautiful schools, Pumphrey Elementary, San Jacinto Elementary, and the new Liles Early Learning Center presenting the BrainMindersTM program to approximately 1,400 students.

Pilots and BrainMindersTM puppets are Judy Wheat and the Wise Old Owl, Susan Passmore with Fiona Fox and Penny Panda, Susan Moore-Fontenot and Gerald Giraffe and Martin Monkey.  Goose Creek Consolidated Independent School District Kami Johnston was Pilot’s gracious host and participated with puppets and the BrainMindersTM script.

Puppets remind children how to protect their brains. Puppet Fiona Fox reminds children to look both ways before crossing the street and to cross at safe intersectionGerald Giraffe says to wear a helmet when riding a bike, exercise to keep brain active, and Penny Panda reminds us to wear a seatbelt when in the car.  Children are also reminded by Martin Monkey to play smart in the park - never push friends and think before Flipping around on Monkey Bars. Following the performance Pilots walk around in the audience and ask children what they learned, and children can get a good look at the puppets. The activity is fun for the children which makes it fun and rewarding for Pilot members.

Pilots were fortunate to perform the BrainMindersTM puppet show to teach children to protect their brains at the beautiful new Liles Early Learning Center - open only a few months.
